Bioplastics

Industry Overview:
Conservation of petroleum resources is something that most people would associate with the automotive industry, with the rise of hybrid cars, electric vehicles, and efficiency regulations. However, nearly 10% of petroleum is processed not through gas tanks, but in the creation of plastics. In order to protect this precious natural resource, many companies are now turning to the development of bioplastics, utilizing renewable feedstocks – corn, sugar cane, wood cellulose, and even banana peels – rather than petroleum.

Other advantages that these products have over traditional plastics include the fact that many are fully biodegradable or even compostable. Challenges include the development of a working infrastructure to compost, recycle, or dispose of bioplastics after use, ensuring that all used biomasses are grown sustainably, and educating consumers of how specific products need to be processed after use.

Common Applications:

  • Thermoplastic Starch
  • Poly-3-hydroxate (PHB)
  • Polyactic acid (PA)
  • Biopolyethylene
  • Polymide 11 (PA11)
  • Plasticizers
  • Flexibilizers
  • Thermoforming
  • Injection molding
  • Foams
