Plastic films are thin, flexible membranes that can be cast or extruded from most types of plastic resin. Their most widespread use is in packaging, particularly food packaging. From the in-store bags you use to gather your produce to candy wrappers to stretch wrap used to preserve leftovers, plastic films offer both protection and convenience to food products. Other uses include bubble wrap, shrink wrap, and IV bags.
Plastic films offer an assortment of advantages over other materials – including rigid plastics – especially when it comes to packaging applications. Rigid plastics have a significantly higher strength-to-weight ratio than glass, metal, or paper; plastic films, on the other hand, offer a similar improvement of strength-to-weight as compared to rigid plastics. This means, obviously, that less packaging is needed; this allows for lower production costs, less end waste, reduced storage space requirements, and lower fuel costs thanks to reduced weights.
