The first known textiles date to prehistoric times, all the way back in 34,000 BCE. Of course, the industry has come a far way since then – in speed and scale of production, as well as in variation of processes and applications. From wovens to nonwovens, and natural to synthetic fibers, this industry’s reach is ever-growing. The fibers that form textiles come in a wide variety of forms beyond the traditional plant and animal sources like cotton and wool. There are mineral textiles including glass and metal fibers, as well as synthetic textiles like nylon and spandex.
Textiles still serve some of their original purposes, including in the makeup of clothing and bags, but they do much more, as well. They are in diapers and handkerchiefs, window shades and parachutes. Industrially, they are used for crop protection (agrotextiles), as implants, (medical textiles), and in embankment reinforcement (geotextiles). They protect our first responders, from the bullet proof vests worn by police officers to the Personal Protection Equipment worn by firefighters.
